1 the benefit and manner of asking the right questions

Critical thinking is not needed in such a world:
  1. We are allowed to make independent decision about religion, politics, and what we will and will not buy or believe.
  2. Anyone trying to persuade us will always explain the disadvantage of what he or she wants us to do.
  3. We can always quickly find a dependable expert when we are confused about one of the life’s important questions.
  4. our minds are calm, engaged, reflective, and curious whenever faced with an important choice.
In the real world, we are assaulted on all sides by others who insist that we must do what they tell us we should do. They claim to possess a truth that we must accept. They say they want to help us. They will not leave us alone to form our own understanding of who we should become.
They tell us half-truths at best.
They often sound as if they know far more than they do. They sound certain about what they claim to be true. They give you what you want to hear.
Daniel Kahneman:
  • fast thinking: typically controlled by emotions
  • slow thinking: rational analysis
Critical thinking is about the critical questions in 3 dimensions:
  1. awareness
  2. ability to ask and answer
  3. desire to actively use
Asking these critical questions is not just something you study in a book, it become part of who you are.
2 ways of thinking styles:
  1. sponge: absorb everything
  2. panning-for-gold: active interaction with knowledge, ask frequent questions and reflect on the answers
2 senses of critical thinking:
  1. weak-sense: defend your current beliefs
  2. evaluate all claims and beliefs, especially your own
You are entitled to your opinion and you quite understandably feel protective of them.
Critical thinking is not a solo practice, it is a social activity. So we need to consider how other people are likely to react to us. Many people are not eager to have their thinking questioned; often, they experience questioning as annoying and unfriendly.
argument = conclusion + reasons
How to keep the conversation going:
  • make it clear to other people you want to learn
  • give them assurances that you wish them well and any disagreement need not result in a verbal bloodbath.
  • try to clarify your understanding of what the other person intends
  • ask if there is any evidence that would cause them to change his mind
  • try to present a model of caring and calm curiosity. As verbal heat turns up, remind yourselves that you are learners, not warriors
  • make certain that your face and body suggest humility, rather than the demeanor of a know-it-all.
  • create an environment that welcomes discussion and question-asking.

2 speed bumps interfering with your critical thinking

Being on the receiving end of critical questions, he may feel uncomfortable or even threatened. As a result, he may become angry or refuse to continue talking. Just become you see asking these questions are important to you and others doesn’t mean he sees the activity in a similar way.
Be aware of how our questions affect the people. If critical thinkers are not careful, they can damage or lose relationships due to the discomfort of those around them.
stereotypes get in the way of critical thinking because they attempt to short-circuit the difficult process of evaluation. As critical thinkers, we want to model curiosity and opens; stereotypes cut us off from careful consideration of what others are saying.
Halo effect: our tendency to associate a specific trait or quality with everything about that person.
belief perseverance: We enter all conversations with a huge amount of baggage. Your beliefs are valuable because they are yours. You have invested a lot of yourself in making those opinions part of who you are.
confirmation bias: our tendency to see only that evidence that confirms what we already believe as being good evidence. Our biggest bias may be that We are not biased, but those with whom we disagree are.
strong-sense critical thinking requires the recognition that judgments are tentative or contextual. We can never permit ourselves to be so sure of anything that we stop searching for an improved version.
availability heuristic: we naturally rely on the information we posses, instead of information we need to make a better decision.
recency effect: what’s immediately available as a basis for our thinking is often the most recent piece of information we have encountered.
egocentrism: we focus on what we know and what we know how to do that we often forget our audience.
wishful thinking: What we wish to be true, we simply declare is true. wishful thinking has staying power because of the frequency of our denial patterns. Quite unconsciously, we fight with the facts, trying to reinforce visions of the world that are rosy beyond the bounds of reality. magical thinking: somebody or some new ideas will make everything wonderful. We believe them not because of any evidence for their claim, but because we so much want to believe them.
All humans are born equal. This is a wishful thinking.

3 What are the issue and the conclusion

An issue is a question or controversy responsible for the conversation or discussion. It is the stimulus for what is being said.
  • descriptive issue: those that raise questions about the accuracy of descriptions of the past, present, or future
  • prescriptive issue: those that raise a question about what we should do or what is right or wrong, good or bad.
  • When you identifying the issue, try to resist the idea that there is one and only one correct way to state the issue.
A conclusion is the message that the speaker or writer wishes you to accept. Conclusions are inferred and derived from reasoning. They are ideas that require other ideas to support them. Unsupported claims are mere opinions.
A fuzzy idea is about all you have. When we write or speak, we often think our meaning is crystal clear. Unfortunately, our audiences can’t hear our inner thoughts and our many hidden beliefs. They do not know our values or backgrounds. One of the greatest barriers to critical thinking is a failure to bridge the communication gap.
One quality that distinguishes mature writers from developing writers is the presence of a clear precise issue. If you dump a bunch of issues into a 5-page writting assignment, you may have tried to do too much.
Making your conclusion easily identifiable not only makes a reader’s task easier, but may also improve the logic of your writing. We should make a special effort to organize our thoughts and express them as explicitly as possible.

4 what are the reasons?

Reasons are beliefs, evidence, metaphors, analogies, and other statements offered to support or justify conclusions. They are the statements that form the basis for creating the credibility of a conclusion.
  • You can’t determine the worth of a conclusion until you identify the reasons.
  • reasons are explanations or rationales for why we should believe a particular conclusion
  • evidence include the facts, research findings, examples from real life, statistics, appeals to experts and authorities, personal testimonials, and analogies. Different kinds of evidence are more appropriate in some situations than in others.
  • There are many techniques to construct a reasoning structure. If some other technique works better for you, by all means use it.

5 what words or phrases are ambiguous

2 wrong assumptions:
  1. assume you and the author mean the same thing. You need to begin your search by avoiding mind reading. You need to get into the habit of asking, “what do you mean by that?”
  2. assume that terms have a single, obvious meaning. Many terms do not. Always ask, “could any of the words or phrases have a different meaning?”
e.g. human rights:
  • Norwegian government: rights to be employed, receive free health care, obtain adequate housing
  • American senator: freedoms of speech, religion, travel,peaceful assembly
The two versions of human rights are not necessarily consistent.
3 different approaches of definition:
  • synonym
  • example
  • specific criteria
Synonym and example fail to tell you the specific properties that are crucial for an unambiguous understanding of the term. Useful definitions are those that specify criteria for usage — the more specific, the better.
Terms that trigger strong emotional reactions are called loaded terms. Their ability to move us outweighs their descriptive meaning. Such terms make trouble for critical thinking because they short-ciucuit thought and trick the mind by directly contacting its emotional circuits while bypassing the descriptive meaning circuits. The persuaders are often aware that some words carry heavy emotional baggage and try to take advantage of these probable emotions.

limits of your responsibility to clarify ambiguity

We suggest you ignore any reason containing ambiguity that makes it impossible to judge the acceptability of the reason.
It’s your responsibility as an active learner to ask questions that clarify ambiguity. But your responsibility stops at that point. You are not required to react to unclear ideas or options.

6 what are the value and descriptive assumptions

Hidden or unstated beliefs may be at least as significant in understanding the argument. Try to dig out the idea that is taken for granted.
change in the behaviors of its citizen: collective responsibility vs individual responsibility.
If you had been more reflective, you would never have accepted something. Remember, the visible surface of an argument will almost always be dressed in its best clothes because the presenter tries to trick you feel you make your own argument.
The invisible beliefs of critical thinkers are autonomy, curiosity and reasonableness.
Value assumptions. We all own a list of many good values such as flexibility, cooperation, and honesty. Most values are on everyone’s list. What makes a difference is the relative intensity with which you hold specific values.
A value assumption is an implicit/unstated preference for one value over another in a particular context. We use value preference and value priorities as synonyms.
typical value conflicts:
  • loyalty vs honesty
  • competition vs cooperation
  • freedom of press vs national security
  • order vs freedom of speech
  • rationality vs spontaneity
  • care (democrats) vs authority (republican)

7 Are there any fallacies in the reasoning

A fallacy is a reasoning trick that an author might use while trying to persuade you to accept a conclusion:
  • use erroneous or incorrect assumptions
  • distract us by making information seem relevant to the conclusion when it is not
  • a reason itself depends on the conclusion’s already being true.
reasoning fallacies:
  • Ad Hominem: An attack on the person, rather than directly addressing the person’s reasons
  • Slippery Slope: assume a single proposed step will set off an uncontrollable chain of undesirable events, when resistances exist to prevent such a chain of events.
  • search for perfect solution: attack a solution because it doesn’t completely solve all the problems
  • appeal to popularity: justify a claim by appealing to sentiments that large groups of people have in common; falsely assumes that anything favored by a large group is desirable.
  • appeal to questionable authority: an authority not in that specific area.
  • appeal to emotions: use emotionally loaded language to distract audience from relevant reasons and evidence. Common emotions appealed to are fear, hope, patriotism, pity and sympathy.
  • straw person: distorting our opponent’s point of veiw so that it is easy to attack.
  • Either-or: assume only 2 alternatives when there are more than 2.
  • Explaining by naming/labeling: Explaining is a demanding work that often tests the boundaries of what we know. It is frequently tempting to hide our ignorance of a complex sequence of causes by labeling the behavior. This trick our mind that we know the phenomenon and the cause. Such explanations oversimplify and prevent us from seeking more insightful understanding.
  • planning fallacy: underestimate how long they will need to complete a task
  • glittering generality: use vague, emotionally appealing words to divert our attention too much to the nature of the person and too little to the legitimate reasons.
  • red herring: use a seemingly relevant topic B to replace topic A
  • begging the question: conclusion is assumed in the reasoning

8,9 How good is the evidence

Always keep in the back of your mind that no evidence will be a slam dunk that gets the job done conclusively. You are looking for better evidence not perfect evidence.
When people react to simple requests for evidence with anger or withdrawal, they usually do so because they are embarrassed as they realize that, without evidence, they should have been less assertive about their beliefs.
Major kind of evidence:
  1. intuition. Much intuition relies on unconscious processing that largely ignores relevant evidence and reflects strong biases. Use it with caution because it is private and others have no way to judge its dependability.
  2. personal experience. It is vivid in our memory but may lead to hasty generalization.
  3. case example. it has detailed catchy description, it is vivid and interesting. Because dramatic cases appeal to our emotions, they distract us from paying close attention to their value as evidence and from seeking other more relevant research evidence. The good thing is they demonstrate important possibilities and put a personal face on abstract statistics.
  4. testimonials. The problems are selectivity, personal interest, omitted information and human factor. It is not very helpful as evidence.
  5. appeal to authority. the primary source is better than the secondary source. Be careful that several factors can influence how evidence is reported: personal needs, prior expectations, general beliefs, attitudes, values, theories, and ideologies. We may check his track record.
  6. personal observation: we tend to see/hear what we wish to see/hear, selecting and remembering those aspects of an experience that are most consistent with our prior experience and background. And the accuracy can be affected by poor attention, rapid movement of events observed and stressful environments.
  7. research studies: research varied greatly in quality. Many claims never get retested. research finding do not prove conlusion but support conclusion at best. Researchers also have expectations, attitudes, values and emotions that bias the questions they ask and the way the conduct research. The need for financial gains, status, security and other factors can affect research outcomes and seleciton of which studies will be published. They have different definitional assumptions, different measures, ambiguous in the wording and gaming in surveys
  8. analogies. They both stimulate insights and deceive us. the relevance of the similarities and the differences.

10 are there vival causes

e.g. the cause of the increase in the depression rate among elementary children:
  • gentic
  • prevalence of teasing among peer groups
  • parental neglect
  • too much TV news coverage of terrorism and wars
  • lack of religion
  • stress
A frequently made error is to look for a simple, single cause of an event. Actually, the cause is really the result of a combination of many contributory causes. It also varies for a particular individual.
we tend to see the cause of human behavior as coming from internal (their personal characteristics) rather than from external (situational forces).
Constructing the causes of past events largely relies on the memories of people but memories are often greatly distorted.

11 are the statistics deceptive

  • Data and scope can be selective,
  • mesurement method can be selective
  • conclusion can be partial

12 what significant information is omitted

Almost any information that you encounter has a purpose: affect your thinking in some way to persuade you. It is wise to hesitate and to think about what the author may not have told you.
certainty of incomplete reasoning:
  1. time and space limitation
  2. most of us have a very limited attention span
  3. the knowledge possessed by the person making the argument will always be incomplete
  4. an outright attempt to deceive
  5. persuaders have different values and beliefs. They try to extinguish your curiosity and to encourage you to rely on unreasonable emotional responses to shape your choices.

Checklist Manifesto

The checklist manifesto: how to get things right. By Atul Gawande, 2009

0 introduction

a story of a stabbed man without knowing how deep the assailant’s knife went.
a story of a cancer operation when the patient’s heart suddenly stopped, due to the overdose of potassium by an anesthesiologist
As Goroviz and MacIntyre point out, we have just 2 reasons that we may nonetheless fail:
  1. ignorance. We only have partial understanding of the world
  2. ineptitude. though knowledge exists, yet we fail to apply it correctly.

1 The problem of extreme complexity

A story of a 3-year-old drowned girl, heart stop 2 hours before resuming, all organs recovered after 2 days except her brain. She went home after 2 weeks.
There is complexity upon complexity. And the answer is to go from specialization to super-specialization.

2 checklist

a story of Boeing Model 299 that is difficult to operate with too many details.
The vital signs every hospital records: body temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and respiratory rate.
In a complex environment, experts are up against 2 main difficulties:
  1. the fallibility of human memory and attention, especially when it comes to mundane, routine matters that are easily overlooked under the strain of more pressing events.
  2. people can lull themselves into skipping steps even when they remember them. In complex processes, after all, certain steps don’t always matter.
Checklists seem to provide protection against such failures. They remind us of the minimum necessary steps and make them explicit. They not only offer the possibility of verification but also instill a kind of discipline of higher performance.

3 The end of the master builder

Brenda (York Univ.) and Sholom (Univ. of Toronto) proposed 3 different kinds of problems in the world:
  1. simple: recipe, such as baking a cake
  2. complicated: like sending a rocket to the moon. Unanticipated difficulties are frequent.
  3. complex: like raising a child. Each child is unique. Although raising one child may provide experience, it does not guarantee success with the next child. The next child may require an entirely different approach from the previous one. The outcomes are highly uncertain.
A story of the construction of a skyscraper.
I saw a line-by-line, day-by-day listing of every building task that needed to be accomplished, in what order, and when. The schedule spread over multiple sheets. There was special color coding, with red items highlighting critical steps that had to be done before other steps could proceed.
submittal schedule: it is also a checklist, but it didn’t specify construction task; it specify communication tasks. The project managers dealt with the unexpected and the uncertain was by making sure the experts spoke to one another — on X data regarding Y process.
They don’t believe in the wisdom of the single individual, but in the wisdom of the group, the wisdom of making sure that multiple pairs of eyes were on a problem.
There’s program called ProjectCenter to deal with the tracking and communication
They trust in one set of checklists to make sure the simple steps are not missed or skipped and in another set to make sure that everyone talks through and resolves all the hard and unexpected problems.
The biggest cause of serious error in this business is a failure of communication.

4 The idea

2005 Katrina catastrophe.
The government did a poor job because it relies on a traditional command-and-control system which rapidly became overwhelmed. There are too many decisions to be made and too little information about precisely where and what help was needed. In face of an extraordinarily complex problem, power needed to be pushed out of the center as far as possible.
Walmart best recognized the complex nature of the circumstances. CEO Lee Scott said, “A lot of you are going to have to make decisions above your level. make the best decision that you can with the information that’s available to you at the time and do the right thing.”
Senior Walmart officials concentrated on setting goals, measuring progress, and maintaining communication lines. In a complex situation when conditions are too unpredictable and constantly changing, they did not issue instruction but worked on making sure people talked.
They had learned to codify that understanding into simple checklists.
Under conditions of complexity, not only are checklists a help, they are required for success.
Restaurant.
While Burger Kings and Taco Bells are driven by tightly prescribed protocol, in great restaurants the food is ever-evolving, refined, and individual.
Following the recipe is essential to making food of consistent quality over time.
In one case, a dish took too long for the eight-to-ten-minute turn-around that customers expect, so they re-engineered the dish, pre-prepared for the sauce and put into repeated test runs. the recipe was rewritten.
The chef also had developed a communication checklist to ensure people recognized and dealt with unexpected problems as a team. Half an hour before opening, everyone gathers in the kitchen for a quick check to discuss unanticipated issues and concerns, such as reservation count, menu changes, fill in for a sick staff member, and a party of 20 delayed into the dinner rush.

5 the first try

In 2006, a woman from world health organization request help to reduce avoidable deaths and harm from surgery. One of the benefits of joining up to work with WHO was gaining access to the health system reports and data from the organization’s 193 member countries. By 2004, surgeons were performing 230 million major operations annually.
In developing countries, the contaminated water is a source of many diseases. However, you have to wait decades for major infrastructure projects. So instead, they have to look for a low-tech solution.
Stephen Luby persuaded P&G to provide a grant for a proper study and to supply Safeguard soap with or without the antibacterial agent to a Pakistan neighborhood. They encourage people to use soap in 6 situations:
  1. wash bodies daily
  2. wash hands after they defecate
  3. wipe an infant
  4. before eat
  5. prepare food
  6. feed it to others
Each family received 3.3 bars of soap per week for one year. During this period, the incidence of diarrhea fell 52% no matter which soap was used. The secret is that the soap is more than soap. It is a behavior-changing delivery vehicle.
We want people to wash a lot. And people are quite poor. So we remove that as barrier.
The soap itself is also a factor. It smelled good and lathered better than the usual soap people bought. People liked washing with it. Global multinational corporations are really focused on having a good cosumer experience than public health people.

antibiotic

The step of applying antibiotic before an incision is commonly missed. Solution is:
  • a check box for the nurse to verbally confirm with the team
  • a metal tent was designed to cover a scalpel, serving as a reminder to run the checklist before making the incision.
  • It is also important to make clear that the surgeon could not start the operation until the nurse gave the okay and remove the tent. With this subtle cultural shift, even a modest checklist had the effect of distributing power.
There are 4 big killers in the surgery world: infection, bleeding, unsafe anesthesia and unexpected. A classic checklist could solve the first 3 except the last one. So they had determined that the most promising thing to do was just to have people stop and talk through the case together — to be ready as a team to identify and address each patient’s unique, potentially critical dangers.
Brian Sexton, a Johns Hopkins psychologist found that 1/4 surgeons believe that junior team members should not question the decisions of a senior practitioner. It turns out, the most common obstacle to effective teams is a kind of silent disengagement.
Their insistence that people talk to one another about each case, at least just for a minute before starting, was basically a strategy to foster teamwork.
Before starting an operation with a new team, there was a check to ensure everyone introduced themselves by name and role. Psychology studies show that people who don’t know one another’s names don’t work together nearly as well as those who do.
activation phenomenon: giving people a chance to say something at the start seemed to activate their sense of participation and responsibility and their willingness to speak up.

6 the checklist factory

Boeing example. fuel freezing to ice makes the plane lose power and crash.
Bad checklists are vague and imprecise.
Good checklists are efficient and easy to use even in the most difficult situations. They don’t try to spell out everything — a checklist cannot fly a plane. Instead, they provide reminders of only the most critical and important steps.
The checklist can’t be lengthy. A rule of thumb is 5~9 items, which is the limit of working memory. It depends on how many seconds you have.
Some use the checklist as it is, but many went on to make their own adjustments. Just as schools and hospitals tend to do things slightly differently, airlines are encouraged to modify the checklists to fit into their usual procedures.

7 The test

In aviation, “pilot not flying” starts the checklist. This is to spread responsibility and the power to question.
Using the checklist involved a major cultural change — a shift in authority, responsibility, and expectations about care.
Forcing the obstinate few to adopt the checklist might cause a backlash that would sour others on participating. We asked the leaders to present the checklist as simply a tool for people to try in hopes of improving their results.

8 The hero in the age of checklist

Just ticking boxes is not the ultimate goal, embracing a culture of teamwork and discipline is.
A story of investors. They don’t buy according to some computer algorithm. They do intensive research and invest for the long run.
Cook enumerated the errors known to occur at any point in the investment process — during the research phase, decision making, execution of the decision and even after making an investment. He then designed detailed checklists to avoid the errors, with clearly identified pause points to run through the items.
The checklist doesn’t tell him what to do, but help him be as smart as possible, ensuring he’s got the critical information, he’s systematic about decision making and he’s talked everyone he should.
Psychologist Geoff Smart studied how venture capitalists made their most difficult decision in judging whether to give an entrepreneur money or not. Finding an entrepreneur who can execute a good idea is more difficult than have a good idea. A person who can take an idea from proposal to reality, work the long hours, build a team, handle the pressures and setbacks, manage technical and people problems alike, and stick with the effort for years on end without getting distracted or going insane.
There are styles of thinking:
  • art critics. based on intuition and long-term experience
  • sponge. soaking every information then go with whatever their guts told them.
  • prosecutor. interrogate entrepreneurs aggressively, testing them with challenging questions
  • airline captains. methodical, checklist-driven approach. They forced themselves to be disciplined and not to skip steps.
Smart wrote a book, who, to explain this finding. But the major investor taking the checklist-driven approach doesn’t increase significantly.
We don’t like checklists. They’re not much fun. It is an embarrassment to our deep belief that the heroes improvise and handle situations of high stakes and complexity.
Hudson River Hero Sully Sullenberger III said it was crew effort. But we insist that’s just the modesty of the quiet hero. We don’t want to talk about teamwork and procedure. We want to talk about how great Sully is.
Professionalism has 4 common elements to expect:
  1. selflessness
  2. skill
  3. trustworthiness
  4. discipline
The most difficult is discipline. We are not built for discipline. We are built for novelty and excitement, not for careful attention to details. Discipline is something we have to work at.
Airlines put a publication date on all their checklists, because they are expected to change with time.
Technology can increase our capabilities, but it can’t deal with the unpredictable or manage uncertainty.
We’re obsessed with having great components, but pay little attention to how to make them fit together well.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, we expect you to be able to do the following:
  • Explain the difference between focused and diffuse modes of thinking.
  • Explain what a chunk is, and how and why you can and should enhance your chunking skills.
  • Explain how working memory and long term memory differ from one another.
  • Describe key techniques to help students learn most efficiently such as: the Pomodoro, metaphor, story, visualization, deliberate practice, and interleaving.
  • Describe actions that hinder students from learning most effectively, such as procrastination, over-learning, Einstellung, choking, multi-tasking, illusions of learning, and lack of sleep.
  • Describe the most important aspects of proper test preparation.
  • Explain the importance of “mindset” in learning.
focus mode vs diffuse mode
  • pinball machine.
  • Diffuse mode is for you to learn something new. You think broadly to try to make a connection.
  • you can’t be in both modes.
[So the bottom line is, when you’re learning] [something new, especially something that’s a little more difficult,]your mind needs to be able to go [back and forth between the two different learning modes.]
[To gain muscular structure, you need to do a][little work every day, gradually allowing your muscles to grow.] Similarly, to build neuro-structure, you need to do a little work [every day, gradually allowing yourself to grow a neuro-scaffold to hang your thinking on, a little bit every day and that’s the trick.
You are not the same person you were after a night’s sleep or even a nap.
use Pomodoro to trick your procrastination mind. It is easy for your mind to focus on 25 minutes and then has a little reward for the break.
Practice makes permanent. Even if the ideas you’re dealing with are abstract, the neural thought patterns you are creating are real and concrete. At least they are if you build and strengthen them through practice.
Study it hard by focusing intently. Then take a break or at least change your focus to something different for a while. During this relaxation, your brain’s diffuse mode has a chance to work away in the background and help you out with your conceptual understanding. Your neural mortar has a chance to dry.
A little everyday vs all at once

working memory only hold 4 chunks of items.
To put a item in long-term memory, you need to revisit it at least a few times to increase the chances you’ll be able to find later when you might need it. The warehouse is so immense to bury each other, you have to practice and repeat a few times.
spaced repetition: repeat a new vocabulary word or a problem-solving technique over a number of days, instead of repeating something 20 times in one evening.
sleep does more than just allow your brain to wash away toxins. It’s actually important part of the memory and learning process. During sleep, your brain tidy up ideas and concepts your thinking about and learning. It erases the less important part of the memory and simultaneously strengthens areas that you need or want to remember. You brain also rehearse some of the tougher parts of whatever you’re trying to learn. Going over what you’re learning before you sleep or nap can increase the chance of dreaming it.

How do you learn completely new things?
I don’t get much out of just going and reading a lot of books. I made a transition from physics to biology. I get into a biology lab and get involved in experiments. learn by doing and learn by osmosis from experts.
How to pay attention something like a boring lecture?
ask a question. The interruption gives rise to a discussion that is a lot more interesting. You learn more by active engagement than passive listening.
Jogging or outdoor exercise is a wonderful way to get the mind disengaged, from the normal train of thought. New ideas come out to the surface. The only problem is remembering all those great ideas. So I take a little notebook along with me.

solve a problem already solved by others?
Until you solved the problem yourself you haven’t exercised your brain and made the unique connection in your brain. It is important for your brain to do that in order to pursue other creative problems.
In facing of criticism, be curious, be willing to accept discomfort sometimes because that’s necessary. When you experience some discomfort, you actually accomplish some kind of change.

More openness and less agreeableness tend to show higher creative achievement. It’s difficult to know how to balance the correct approach.

recalling is much more efficient than rereading the text a number of times. The retrieval process itself enhances deep learning.
Merely glancing at a solution and thinking you truly know it yourselves is one of the most common illusions of competence in learning. you must have the information persisting in your memory if you’re to master the material well enough to do well on tests and to think creatively with it. Highlighting and underlining must be done very carefully, otherwise it will be ineffective and misleading. Making lots of motions with your hand can fool you into thinking you’ve placed the concept in your brain. Words or notes on the margin that synthesize key concepts are a very good idea.
Students like to keep rereading their notes is because it provide the illusion that the material is also in their brain. It is easier to look at the book than recalling. Students persist in their illusions studying that isn’t very effective. This is a reminder that just wanting to learn the material and spend a lot of time with it, doesn’t guarantee you’ll actually learn it. The helpful way to make sure you are learning not fooling yourself with illusions of competence, is to test yourself on whatever you’re learning.

Sometimes your initial intuition about what’s happening or what you need to be doing is misleading. You have to unlearn your erroneous older ideas or approaches even while you’re learning new ones.

Avoiding procrastination is so important because good learning is a bit by bit activity. You want to avoid cramming which doesn’t build solid neural structures.

  3. reward to beat procrastination

It is normal to have a few negative feelings about beginning a leanring session. It’s how you handle those feelings that matters. say “ Quit wasting time… you will feel better soon.” focus on process instead of product. Allow yourself to back away from judging yourself and allow yourself to relax into the flow of the work.
Harness your zombies: you don’t want to do a full scale change of old habits but override parts of them and develop a few new ones.

plan your quitting time is as important as planning your working time.
